Accountant I/II/III – Public Works

Public Works is offering a rewarding opportunity to fill an Accountant position within the Finance Division. Accountant is a career series ranging from Accountant I through Accountant III. Qualifications for series level are dependent upon education and experience.The vision of the Public Works Department is to be a valued community partner enhancing quality of life for all fellow County residents. This individual will join an American Public Works Association (APWA) accredited organization of 300 public works professionals who provide a full range of services throughout the County of San Luis Obispo. The Finance Division of Public Works employs 20 full-time accounting staff with a wide range of skills and responsibilities.The Finance Division is looking for a team-player who will collaborate with staff to provide the financial support needed to continue Public Works’ high level of services. Public Works takes the lead on complex and unique projects that are both challenging and rewarding. The financial responsibility and department-wide collaboration offered with this position allows for continued professional and technical development that is unique at Public Works.The Public Works Department offers a hybrid work schedule (2 days remote work per week) after passing the probation period, as well as internal career development programs like mentoring and mock interviews.The successful candidate will manage various Special District funds administered by Public Works, including Flood Control Zones 3, 4, 18, County Service Area 12, and coordinate the Public Works annual Property Tax Roll. The Finance Division is looking for a team-player who will collaborate with Water Resources and Utilities staff to provide the financial support needed to continue Public Works’ high level of services.Responsibilities include preparing the annual budgets, processing of revenues and expenditures, initiating debt payments, drafting Board items, and preparing monthly budget reports.to view detailed job description of Accountant I.to view detailed job description of Accountant II.to view detailed job description of Accountant III.This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time throughout the County.Public Works is interested in someone who is organized, accurate, self-sufficient, and collaborates well in a team. The ideal candidate for this position will have a background in accounting, preferably governmental accounting. Being familiar with basic accounting standards and financial transactions with experience using SAP is desired. Due to this role working with outside partner agencies, including presenting the annual budget and other financial reports, the successful candidate will need good presentation skills and the ability to coordinate relevant information between operations and financial components.Education and ExperienceA combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:Accountant I: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field, including 12 semester units or 18 quarter units of accounting.Accountant II: The same as above plus one year of experience at a level equivalent to Accountant I.Accountant III: The same as above plus two years of experience at a level equivalent to Accountant II.Applicants must submit their application online by the final filing date.An initial application review will be conducted.
