IT Security Apprentice (Graduate) – AD2739NB

Start Date: To be confirmed (Defined by the course)Duration of Post: 2 – 4 years (dependent on entry point)IT Services at the University of St Andrews is seeking a highly motivated IT Security Apprentice (Graduate Apprentice), reporting to the IT Security Officer to support an ever-increasing demand for sustaining and improving an information security system within a successful IT Security function.The post holder will learn to help maintain the IT Security for the University by helping other team members and giving support in a broad range of security tasks such as SEIM monitoring, log forensics and data analysis. They will be expected to assist in responding to and where appropriate, helping resolve or escalate reported security incidents, collating incident and event data and producing exception and management reports.Additionally, they will help with the installation and configuration management of security systems and applications, including policy assessment and compliance tools, network security appliances and host-based security systems and assist others in performing vulnerability assessments, in some cases followed by appropriate remedial action, to ensure that systems are protected. They will also assist in ensuring that patches are applied, where appropriate, and security guidelines are followed and will help others in the team promote awareness of applicable security policies and standards.The successful candidate will have a keen interest in IT or network security together with:

  • The ability to quickly absorb and develop a technical understanding of operating systems and applications.
  • Knowledge of information security principles, including risk assessment, intrusion detection, Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) tools.
  • Knowledge of network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and associated network protocols and concepts.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of vulnerability scanning and report writing.
  • Capacity to learn procedures and practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work persuasively and collaboratively with a wide audience.
  • The ability to conduct effective research using a variety of media.
  • The ability to use an ethical mindset while investigating and analysing security incidents.
